Quartz is the world’s most widely appreciated mineral group. It encompasses a spectrum of colours and patterns, and occurs in two basic forms: crystalline and chalcedony. Amethyst is the most popular crystalline quartz for jewellery. Its beautiful purple colour has symbolized celibacy and piety in both western and eastern cultures. Tibetans consider amethyst sacred to Lord Buddha and fashion rosaries from amethyst beads. The name amethyst comes from a Greek word meaning “not drunk.” Indeed, the ancient Greeks made wine glasses out of amethyst in the belief that it prevented drunkenness.
